Gertrude Lamont

In May 1931, Gertrude Lamont was wed to Captain Charles Saltzman in Washington. Turns out this marriage wasn't the "Happily Ever After" we all hope for when tying that knot.

Twenty years after her wedding, an $300,000 "Alienation of Affection" suit was brought against her by Mrs. Justa Jones. Mrs. Jones claimed that Gertrude stole the love of her life and married him.

The case ended in mistrial and dismissed when the judge ruled that Mrs. Jones' counsel asked an improper question of Mr. Jones.

What question was deemed "improper'? The counsel asked Mr. Jones if he had written the quote, "the privilege of your body is a rare favor", on the margin of a book that Gertrude had presented to him as a gift while she was married to Charles Saltzman. Defense objected and Judge James Kirkland declared a mistrial.

Mrs. Justa Jones lost her husband and case,
